Anyone who knows me well knows that my weakness has always been sweets. When I was a child and my grandmother made fudge, she had to lock it up in her desk, so I wouldn't eat the whole batch. In my adulthood, dark chocolate became my addiction.
When I became vegan, I was quite worried about my sweet tooth. As it turns out, I had nothing to worry about. There are many sweet vegan options out there.
This week I tried some new vegan cookies made by a company called Nutridel.
The cookies came in four different flavors – pecan, oatmeal, almond and flaxseed. They are high in protein and low in saturated fat. They are also cholesterol free, high in iron and fiber, preservative free and zero refined sugar. Wow – how could they possibly taste appetizing? I had my doubts.
I started with the oatmeal. It was crisp and exceptionally fresh tasting. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't that crazy about the light coconut flavor. I have found that a lot of vegan deserts use coconut and I have never been a big fan, but it was enjoyable and in a pinch, it would do just fine.
The next cookie I tried was the flaxseed cookie. I was expecting standard stuff , but this cookie was incredible, and I had to stop myself from gobbling down the entire package. It was sweet, nutty, crisp with a hint of cinnamon.
By the way, flaxseed is one of the most beneficial foods you can consume.
There is evidence it could reduce your risk of chronic disease. Each tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s which is great for the heart.
Flaxseed also contains fiber.
So you can get all that in one delicious cookie? The answer is yes. If you are vegan and have a sweet tooth, you can't go wrong with this flaxseed cookie.
One cookie is only 95 calories and there are two to a package. I also liked it crumbled up over vegan ice-cream or sorbet. You know that saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Well change that to a “flaxseed cookie a day keeps the doctor away” because this is the real deal. Yummy and great for you.
The pecan cookie was a tough one for me because I am not a fan of pecans. It tasted a little more sweet than the others and the sweetness lingered in my mouth.
It was crisp, fresh and packed with iron, fiber and vitamin e but not being a fan of pecans makes it difficult for me to judge.
Last but not least was the almond cookie.
It had a real straight forward clean, almond taste. All the cookies contain a herbal plant called amaranth. The name amaranth is Greek and means “never-fading flower.”
Amaranth grain has a high fiber, calcium and iron content, and also has a sweet, nutty taste. It paired well with the taste of the almonds.
In conclusion, I don't know exactly how Nutridel did it, but they managed to make some delicious cookies packed with fiber, iron, vitamins and whole grains without eggs, butter or refined sugar. Pretty amazing.
Vegan day 152 – Wish me luck
