Do Vegans Have Better Sex? & My First Vegan Memorial Day

June 1, 2011

Do vegans have better sex? (#vegan)

Sorry I haven't blogged in a week. I had to go out of town and spent seven days in a state famous for all things beef including beef shakes.

No, I'm not kidding. Obviously I had a tough time eating out and spent most nights in my dark hotel room microwaving veggie burgers or trying to mix protein powder into cold soy milk which doesn't work without a blender.

It was total disaster and made me want to give up but I didn't. I am determined to find an easy way for everyone to go vegan and I know this is a journey and not a result.

So where do you eat when you are in a small town without a lot of options?

The first place I spotted driving in was McDonalds. I remembered seeing the commercials on TV recently for their “healthy breakfast oatmeal” and decided I would stop in the next morning after my run. Bad choice – that oatmeal made my teeth hurt!

The oatmeal you buy in a grocery store usually has one ingredient called rolled oats. McDonald's oatmeal has 21 ingredients! WTH?? – keep it simple guys – 21 ingredients in a bowl of oatmeal is not necessary.

It's crazy that they portray this as a “healthy breakfast option” considering this oatmeal has about the same amount of sugar as a snicker's bar. According to the McDonald's web site – you can ask for the oatmeal without added brown sugar but that only cuts the sugar in half. My advice – don't eat the “health breakfast oatmeal” at McDonalds.

Got back from the beef state just in time for Memorial Day. Had a few friends over and made some wonderful vegan options including…..

I served the avocado pasta with a big bowl of sliced seasonal fresh fruit, a plate of veggie sushi, steamed asparagus and a tossed green salad. The kids got macaroni and cheese and everyone seemed to love their meal. It was definitely strange not to use the grill on Memorial Day.

DO VEGANS HAVE BETTER SEX???????

Last but not least, lets talk about sex I know it is an unusual topic for a food blog but I think it is an important one. So do vegans have better sex?

I have been doing some research and read that scientists have found that certain foods cause a chemical reaction in the body which increases the libido in both males and females.

For example, foods with large levels of zinc and vitamin B complexes are said to elevate testosterone levels, boosting your sexual desire. Examples of those foods are almonds, basil, asparagus, figs, pine nuts, celery, bananas and avocado.

On the other hand, a deficiency of amino-acids in the diet can actually decrease testosterone levels and result in libido reduction so make sure you are eating enough oats, nuts, wheat, soybeans, raw cereals, spinach, parsley, potatoes, soy products, brown rice and lima beans. Something to take in account for your next date night.

Well, that's all I got for today. Tune in tomorrow and I will unveil my crunchy libido salad and dark chocolate sauce desert.

Wish me luck. Heading into my fifth week as a vegan.

  1. plant fusion protein powder is great! Vegan. Wheat, dairy, soy and corn free for those with allergies. Pea, Rice and artichoke. Awesome amino acid profile equating to 21 gm clean protein per serving. This is the 1st protein powder I've ever used that I could put in a shaker cup and mix. Since I spend 3/4 of my life on the road that's essential for me. Tastes great too. I love this proteinn powder. It's available at most health food stores although it is a newer product. If you can't find it, ask where you shop and they'll get if for you. My hfs did.

  2. I've been looking for a protein powder and they are all flavored – there is a plantfusion "unflavored" – is it really unflavored, so I can add it to smoothies (made in my awesome new blendtec blender)?
