Nontoxic Cookware

nontoxic cookware

New study shows a single scratch on a nonstick pan releases 9000 toxic microplastic particles, while a broken coating releases over 2 million.

Many consumers are unaware of the health risks of scratched or damaged non-stick pans, but once compromised, these coatings can be hazardous to your health. Nontoxic cookware is material that does not leach harmful chemicals into your food.

Also, if you have shopped for nontoxic cookware, you might have been fooled by misleading labels like “Green” frying pans or “Healthy” non-stick pans. These terms are not regulated, and pans with toxic substances could be hiding. For example, some pans labeled “PFOA” free may still contain other harmful PFAS chemicals or PTFE, a fluoropolymer made from PFAS.

Manufacturers Who Claim Nontoxic Cookware

Consumer Reports recently tested a nontoxic PTFE pan and found toxic PFOA and PFAS were present. Which is why it was important for me to make a list of nontoxic cookware free of all chemicals that could potentially harm you.

What Does PFAS Stand For?

PFAS stands for Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of artificial chemicals used in a variety of products like non-stick cookware. Because of their widespread use many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals.

Why Are PFAS Harmful?

PFAS are harmful because they are persistent in the environment and can accumulate in the human body, leading to health issues. Studies suggest a link between PFAS exposure and a range of health issues, including an increased risk of certain cancers, reproductive problems, and immune system effects. Some studies also point to associations between PFAS exposure and thyroid disease, cardiovascular issues, and liver damage.

How Do I Know What Nontoxic Cookware To Buy?

The best nontoxic cookware is Durable Enameled Cast Iron. It is superior for heat retention and nontoxic cooking. The enamel coating helps to reduce sticking. Always pre-heat your pan with a low heat to help prevent sticking. Here are my recommendations.

Another safe, nontoxic cookware alternative is Stainless Steel Cookware. While you can’t go wrong with a stainless steel pan, you need a layer of oil so your food doesn’t stick.

I recommend oils like avocado, sunflower, sesame, canola, or peanut oil with a high smoke point. A cooking oil’s smoke point refers to the temperature when the oil starts to smoke. Here are my recommendations.

Also, be aware of plastic exposure in plastic containers, bottled water, and food preparation. More studies need to be done, but microplastics in your brain could play a role in dementia. I highly recommend replacing your plastic utensils. You can find more information about microplastics here.
