Hi! Thank you for your podcast. I have been reading that nutritional yeast is actually not good for you at all. That it’s a neurotoxin. Have you heard about that? What’s your take on it? Thank you!
Hi Daya – Yes I have heard the same rumors but the jury is still out for me. One of the theories is that nutritional yeast contains MSG-like compounds. A compound that overexcites the cells. Yeast is a natural source of natural glutamic acid (glutamate) which triggers the MSG fears, but I haven’t read anything that proves. that. When you eat glutamic acid in real foods, your body controls how it is absorbed.
Another rumor is about lead and Dr Greger did an article about that and most of those fears were also unfounded. You can read more about that here.
Another rumor I have heard is about fortified nutrition yeast not being healthy but I have done a lot of research and that has not been proven to me yet.
All in all I would say the rumors about nutritional yeast do not out weigh the health benefits and I still include it in my daily diet. I especially like Braggs.
Thanks for the question and thanks for being part of our healthy community!
