This recipe is a good reminder that being vegan doesn’t mean missing out on the classics. Quinoa and lentils make a delicious and healthy substitute for this sloppy joe. This sloppy joe can also be made in a soup pot or slow cooker. Whichever you prefer. Make sure you have some soft yummy buns to soak up the rich juices.
Not only do those lentils taste delicious in this recipe, they are also one of the healthiest foods you can eat. They are a good source of calcium, zinc, niacin and vitamin K. They are also rich in dietary fiber, lean protein, folate and iron.

This looks amazing! We’re in Iowa with dangerous wind chills today and not leaving the house…the only ingredient I don’t have on hand is yellow mustard. Maybe a bbq sauce or just omit? Any suggestions? I can’t wait to try this!

Yes – no mustard needed – and use any barbecue sauce you love – If you look at the comments below – Kenzie subbed ketchup for tomato sauce and added chili powder and smoked paprika – There can be lots of variations. We absolutely love this sloppy joe recipe! After trying a few vegan versions, this is definitely the winner. We sub ketchup for the tomato sauce 1:1, add chili powder, use smoked paprika, and of course serve with potato chips 🙂 so yummy!

Good Recipe, it doesn’t taste like the sloppy joe mixture from the can, I was used to. However it turned out great. I left the quinoa out (not my favorite food) and added cole slaw and it was great!

Only had green lentils, and tweaked recipe a tiny..but uh nom nom My new favorite protein punch + comfort food. Perfect Love Love Love….side note I hated sloppy joe anything as a child and this is the bomb

I really appreciate your recipes. I only wish there were vegan recipes out there that didn’t have so many ingredients and were less time-intensive to prepare…..
Hi Donnawam – I know, there are a lot of ingredients and I don’t usually post recipes with too many exotic ingredients. The thing about this recipe is that most of the ingredients are staples like brown sugar, yellow mustard, apple cider, hot sauce and paprika which is why I didn’t mind posting it. Good recipe. My 4 year old enjoyed it. My 6 year old wasn’t thrilled with the quinoa, I would leave that out next time just for him. If you eat cheese my husband liked it with cheese on top. I thought it had a great flavour. I used green lentils.
